Pre-Law Advising
UMass Lowell offers pre-law advising to all students across the university, regardless of major or program. The advising team consists of experienced attorneys and Law School Admission Council trained professors who are very familiar with law school preparation and the application process. They are happy to answer your questions by email or schedule a one-on-one meeting in person or virtually to help you on your journey to law school.
The Pre-Law Advising Team
Prof. David McCauley, Esq.
Prof. McCauley was employed as a police officer and detective with the Metro-Dade Police Department in Miami, Fla. After being injured on duty, he returned to Massachusetts and attended Suffolk University Law School. He worked as a Middlesex County Assistant District Attorney, assigned to the Special Investigations Unit overseeing numerous criminal investigations and prosecutions. He is currently teaching and coaching the UMass Lowell Mock Trial team, along with advising aspiring students regarding law school applications, admissions, and careers in law. He is admitted to the Bar in Massachusetts and Florida.
Prof. Walter Toomey, Esq.
Prof. Toomey studied philosophy and worked as a computer programmer and bioinformaticist before attending law school and becoming a trial attorney. His law practice focuses on business and employment litigation in Massachusetts. He teaches a variety of law courses in the Legal Studies program and has served as a pre-law advisor for many years. He is available to supervise Legal Studies internships and he frequently works one-on-one with students in advanced directed studies and honors projects in law.
Prof. Emma Rodman
Prof. Rodman is a political theorist with research interests in American political thought, democratic theory, computational linguistics, and the meanings and histories of political concepts. Her work has appeared in American Political Thought, Political Analysis, and Law, Culture, and the Humanities. She received her doctorate from the University of Washington (2020) and previously held a Values and Public Policy postdoctoral research associate position at Princeton University. She is also a trained Law School Admission Council pre-law advisor.
